The Bible in an Hour
Jul 28th
Many of you will remember the “Bluffers Guide” public theology lectures run by our two in-house PhDs, Paul Roberts and Simon Taylor, over the summer months of yesteryear. For those who missed those very popular talks, they are still available to download at www.virtualtheology.net.
Simon is now repeating (one half of) the formula with a new series from late July to late August this year. “The Bible in an Hour” is a series of six sessions, each lasting one hour, in which Simon will tackle and explain various books of the Bible.
The talks take place in the Undercroft at St Mary Redcliffe Church, BS1. The time is 8pm each night and the dates Tuesdays 28th July; 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th August. Each talk will formally end at 9:30pm but the conversation is likely to continue in the pub.
Having attended many of Simon’s previous excursions, often with his evangelical sidekick Paul (or is it Simon who is the liberal sidekick?)… I would strongly recommend this series to anyone with the slightest interest in the Bible, theology, or spirituality. Which I would guess is quite a few readers of this blog.
Gigs this weekend
Jul 28th
Emily Wilson has told me about two good gigs coming up this weekend which may be of interest to Foundationers.
The first is Rue Royale (http://www.myspace.com/rueroyale) at the Folk House, Park Street (http://www.bristolfolkhouse.co.uk/) on Friday night.
The second is Matt Wilson’s band Diego (http://www.myspace.com/wearediego) at Mother’s Ruin, St Nicholas’ Market (http://www.myspace.com/themothersruinbristol) on Saturday night.
If you’d like you know more please contact Emily at emilywilson1982@googlemail.com, or of course simply turn up!
Thanks

Community Meal, Thursday 23rd July
Jul 15th
This will be at Becca Hennessy’s place. Becca has been with us for a few months now, attending Community Meals and the Rule of Life Group – and littleservice when family commitments allow! This is her first hosting of a Community Meal so we hope for a good showing. (I’ll be there, not least because I’m always nosily interested in new people’s homes…)
For anyone who is new to the group, the Community Meal is Foundation’s monthly social gathering which takes place at different members’ houses. It is a great opportunity to get to know people.
The evening will start at 8pm. Bring a main and/or dessert and/or something to drink. For more information including where we are meeting, get in touch with Tim via the email address on the Contact page.
Foundation bike ride, Sunday 19th July
Jul 8th
As we’re still in the grip of uncommon fine weather and summer exuberance, Lexy Long is organising a Foundation bike ride on Sunday 19th July afternoon.
The start point and route are yet to be confirmed, but the idea is that we will meet in the afternoon and ride out to some desirable location (specifically, a pub) for eating/drinking, then back in time for littleservice in the evening.
More details will follow. However if you’d like to register an interest now and join the party, please get in touch with Tim using the email address on the Contact page (side bar).
Foodation – ethical/natural food from Suma
Jul 8th
Lexy Long is putting together an email list for anyone who would like to be part of Foodation, a new enterprise involving wholesale shopping from Suma.
Suma is an ethical/natural/health food company which has been around for a few years now. For those interested in healthy and/or ethically sourced/prepared food this is a great opportunity. Suma is an importer and wholesaler. The website explains the history and philosophy: www.suma.coop/downloadlinks.html
Everything’s organic and there’s a nice eco fairtrade vibe about it. The catalogue is online or Lexy has a paper one which she can can drop round to anyone who wants it (depending where they live). If you are interested in signing up to the list or placing an order, please email Rob at the email address on the Contact page (top bar), and he will put you in touch with Lexy. She can then take your order, or explain more as the case may be.
Friendly Stage – Dec. 20th
Dec 2nd
The pioneer Friendly Stage night on Friday 21st was a great success, with many polished contributions degenerating slowly but inexorably, as the wine flowed, to the final chaos of an improvised ”sea shanty” for accordion, violin and voice. I have the MP3 file…
So, Anna McMullen and Anna Kissell are organising a second open floor creative performance night on the evening of Saturday 20th December. There will be mulled wine and mince pies, and any other goodies brought along by you! This will probably be the last Foundation gathering before Christmas and before many of us go away… So come if you can!
“The Friendly Stage” will take place from 8pm at the Kissells’ place – 164 Lower Cheltenham Place, Montpelier. Bring mulled wine, mince pies or other festive treats. Repeating the blurb from last time (as the message remains constant), Anna and Anna write:
“The performer lies in every one of us - be you a storyteller, rap artist, computer-synthesist, musician, poet, or tap dancer. Come to share your talents, drink wine, eat cheese, and look on with admiration as others bring their art to the floor. Bring a bottle and some cheese. If you would like to perform, email anna.mcmullen@yahoo.co.uk. (Late entries on the night also accepted).”
Needless to say you don’t have to be a performer in order to attend – so get it in the diary regardless of whether you have any act of your own in mind. However as the name suggests, this will be an unthreatening forum in which to be creative, extravagant or silly and to eat, drink and be merry!
